how to travel safely in 2021: my covid travel tip

Welcome to Flight 1123 – a nonstop trip to an overdue adventure! Did you know that traveling improves your mental health? It’s time to get up and get out to explore the world. The world is too big to stay in one place, eating the same foods.

I don’t know about everyone else, but 2020 was definitely one for the books! From the Covid outbreak to the mandatory quarantine, then Tiger King, and finally the 2020 Presidential Elections – what a disaster. Oh!  Let’s not forget George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter Movement. There were so many more life-changing events in 2020. Can we have a break, please?! I have expressed the importance to my family and friends –  everyone, really – that taking a fresh breath of air, preferably on a beach somewhere far away from home,  is important and can improve your mental state. So let’s get up and get out. Let’s explore the world!

First things first, should we consider  traveling in 2021?

OF COURSE! Last year I took a trip to Mexico in October and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I’ll share those exciting details in another post. So, before deciding to travel, I need you to understand that you must consider a list of personal, ethical, AND environmental circumstances before catching flights…not feelings!

These include:

  • The pandemic situation in your location and your chosen destination( especially accounting for health services)
  • Goverment travel warnings in both destinations(is that country accepting tourists?)
  • Travel insurance, and whether you’re covered for COVID
  • Flights, transport, and accomodation, etc
  • Your personal willingness to travel responsibly and respect the protocols stipulated.

The travel industry is an extremely important industry for so many countries from the Bahamas to Mexico, even to South Africa. Without tourism, the impacts on the country’s economics are extensive. While the travel industry needs people to catch flights…not feelings, it not only needs people to do it responsibly but also strategically. This would make the opportunities to travel across the world feasible and will not inundate the local health infrastructure.

So how do we travel responsibly and  strategically?

To travel responsibly and strategically, you need to do one important thing – DO YOUR RESEARCH! Pre-Covid, traveling was effortless if you had the funds. All you had to do was book a flight and accommodation. Simple as that. Now, it’s not as simple. You need to do your research! The last thing you want is to turn up in your dream vacation hotel or on the beach, and then find out you can’t go back to your home country because you didn’t quarantine prior to catching your flight. Now you’re all up in your feelings – what happened to catch flights, not feelings? Before booking any flights or hotel accommodations, you need to do your research. Simple as that…or I can do it for you.

Some questions to ask before traveling:

Is your home country or intended destination a COVID-19 hotspot?

Do you need to quarantine on arrival at your destination or home country?

Are hotels accepting foreign tourists at this point (many are open for business travel only)?  Are you allowed to leave and return to your home country?

Is a COVID-19 vaccine required to enter the country?

Do you need negative PCR tests to depart or enter your destination? If so, where can you obtain  PCR tests before, during, and after your trip?

Is it possible to obtain travel insurance to cover you for the pandemic (many companies won’t insure if there are travel warnings active for your intended destination)?

Can you still turn up with the current restrictions?

Alternative destinations to visit

So what’s our takeaway? Traveling isn’t as easy as it was prior to Covid. You need to do your due diligence by finding out the do’s and don’ts before you get tipsy off of your third margarita.
